ILO and Sweden sign project extension to advance digitalisation of the Labour Inspection in Kosovo

On 6 April 2023, the ILO signed an agreement with Sweden for extending the project on improving occupational safety and health (OSH) in Kosovo* through the digitalization of the Labour Inspectorate. The project will run until March 2025.

The project will advance the digitalisation of labour inspection through an electronic case management system (ECMS). Together with evidence-based planning, the use of digital tools will enable labour inspectors to collect and analyse data on working conditions, safety and health, wages, and other labour standards and to identify potential violations and conduct inspections effectively.

Kosovo has been facing challenges in improving workplace safety. In 2022 alone, 15 people died while at work, with most of the casualties occurring in the construction sector. The Labour Inspectorate lacks sufficient technical and human resources to enforce labour law and OSH law.

To address these challenges, the ILO supported the Labour Inspectorate to develop a multiannual strategy, in order to build a well-functioning labour inspectorate by enforcing decent working conditions and safety and health standards.

The aim of the project extension is to further support the Labour Inspectorate in implementing the strategy. In addition to the digitalization of the Labour Inspectorate, the project will also conduct training of labour inspectors in conducting inspections and delivering awareness raising campaigns in collaboration with workers’ and employers’ organizations.

The project will be implemented under the framework of the ILO Flagship Programme Safety + Health for All. With this initiative, Kosovo is expected to have a better-regulated workplace, improved working conditions, and a safer and healthier working environment for workers.
