ILO and Sida sign USD 3.2Million agreement for project on promoting decent work in Rwanda's informal economy.

The project, which will be implemented from November 2017 until 2020 aims at addressing decent work deficits in Rwanda’s informal economy, mostly focusing on improved living conditions for the working poor, particularly women and youth, in the urban and semi-urban areas; and youth and women who are affected by underemployment and poor working conditions.

This project is contributing to the implementation of the Rwanda DWCP as well as contributing to the government’s Vision 2020 and the National Employment Policy for Rwanda which put youth employment at the centre of the country’s development agenda. This project is based on a direct request from the ILO’s constituents in Rwanda to pilot interventions prioritized in the Rwanda DWCP. In particular, the project aims at achieving the following deliverables:

• More workers and businesses accessing or adopting improved working conditions; more income and earning
• Improved capacity and motivation/ willingness of social partners to promote decent work more effectively
• Increased number of informal workers with social security coverage
• Increased number of informal workers subject to improved and effective legislation, and
• Increased number of informal workers subjected to quality OSH inspection

The project will be implemented through active engagement and collaboration of the ILO constituents in Rwanda who are MIFOTRA, CESTRAR and PSF. Project interventions will be focussed on the construction sector as well as textile (tailoring) sub-sector
