ILO and other UN agencies jointly support youth skills development in Tanzania
ILO, together with three other UN agencies and Government of Tanzania, organized a discussion forum where different beneficiaries of youth projects shared best practices.
Dar es Salaam (ILO News) : Following the culmination of a youth skills development project in Tanzania, four implementing UN agencies, including ILO, organized a knowledge sharing workshop in Dar-es-Salaam 5-7 December 2016, bringing together stakeholders to learn from each other’s experiences.
The four UN agencies who supported the project, International Labour Organisation (ILO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and UN Women worked in collaboration with the Tanzanian Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled (PMO-LEYD) and others to address the following high priority areas:
sustainable enterprise development,
decent work for youth,
enhancing agriculture productivity,
skills development and
building labour market information systems.
Hon. Dr. Abdallah Possi, Deputy Minister of State, during his official opening speech appreciated the joint effort of UN agencies in supporting this one-year project that targets the skills development of the youth in the country. He further invited participants to take part in the visiting programme organized by the workshop, to see the various project beneficiaries in Dodoma and Singida. Among those to be visited include beekeeping projects in Dodoma and Singida, production of quality sunflower seeds variety for oil production, industrial and fabrication services, and the value addition centre for young entrepreneurs.
Information on UN support to Tanzania
Tanzania, like many sub-Saharan African countries, has experienced positive and sustained economic growth over the last decade, averaging around 7 per cent. However, the high growth has had limited impact on alleviating poverty.
The UN through it’s Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP II), under the ‘Delivering as One’ (DaO) agenda continues to support national efforts in promoting youth empowerment through sustainable employment. The UN also continues its efforts to support the Government of Tanzania in its poverty reduction initiatives that promote equity, non-discrimination, participation, and accountability.
