ILO and Montenegro celebrate 10 years of cooperation
Since 2006, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Montenegro have been working together to create jobs, improve working conditions and promote rights at work.

On 14th July 2006, Montenegro became 179th member state of International Labour Organization (ILO), the only tripartite UN agency, which since 1919 brings together governments, employers and workers representatives to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men.
During the decade of membership in the ILO, Montenegro has ratified 72 ILO Conventions, including the 8 fundamental Conventions. In September 2016, two new conventions will enter into force in Montenegro: The Safety and Health in Construction Convention, 1988 (No. 167) and the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187).
The ILO has been involved in a wide range of policy areas in the country, including international labour standards, labour inspection, strengthening the institutional capacity of employers’ organizations, promoting youth employment, strengthening the mechanisms of collective bargaining and the settlement of labour disputes, promoting gender equality and the rights of LGBT workers, enhancing occupational safety and health and tackling undeclared work and informal economy.
While the ILO has no premanent presence in Montenegro, the activities and the visibility of the Organzation have substantially increased over the past few years. The first Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) between Montenegro and the International Labour Organization was signed on 8 April 2015 for the period of 2015-2017, as the first cooperation programme between the two parties to enhance social dialogue, promote employment and enabling environment for sustainable enterprises, and formalization of the informal economy.
This year, the ILO project office in Montenegro performs numerous activities with national counterparts to fullfil the priorities set up in the DWCP (youth unemployment, informal economy, green jobs and enterpreneurship promotion), but also contributes to the implementation of regional projects tackling social dialogue, labour inspection, employment services and inclusive labour market promotion. The ILO has also become an active particpant in the work of the UN country team, contributing to the development and implementation of UN strategies and programmes in Montenegro.
