ILO and IOM agree to collaborate for evidence-based policy development in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) is partnering with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support the United Republic of Tanzania to develop a monograph on labour migration based on the data from the 2022 Population and Housing Census. The objective of developing the monograph is to enhance the availability and use of information on Labour Migration in Tanzania to facilitate evidence-based decision-making as well as supporting the formulation of harmonised policies geared towards improved labour migration governance.

As part of the support, the IOM in coordination with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and Office of the Chief Government Statistician Zanzibar (OCGS) organised a stakeholder meeting on 4th September 2024 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The main objectives of the meeting were to lay down the pathway for partnership between the different participating institutions, lay strategies for linking the monograph to the development of the Migration Policy and to build consensus on the way forward in the implementation of the monography. The BRMM programme as a collaborating partner in this monograph, attended this important meeting to provide input which will be instrumental in ensuring the success of this project.

The meeting agreed that the ILO/BRMM will undertake the following:

• Provide technical expertise in data analysis and report writing with respect to the section on international labour migration.
• Ensure that the monograph is aligned with the latest international labour standards and best practices to accurately reflects the current labour migration profile, trends and challenges.
• Develop policy recommendations relating to international labour migration.
