ILO and government officials from the Republic of Korea discuss strengthening SSE on a global scale
Mr Choi, an ILO COOP staff member held meetings with stakeholders from the Republic of Korea to discuss strengthening the country’s efforts on promoting SSE at the international level.

Mr. Dong Il Choi, ILO Cooperatives and Social & Solidarity Economy (SSE) Development Specialist met Mr. Gitae Kim, Secretary to the President for Social Economy in the President’s Office to discuss a number of points for strategic cooperation on the SSE at the international level. The meeting was also attended by Hyungsik Eum, Strategy and statistics coordinator at the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and Laurence Kwark, Secretary General of the Global Social Economy Forum (GSEF).
During the meeting Mr. Choi introduced the new ILO project “Strengthening SSE Knowledge Base” that has a component on cooperatives statistics. He enquired about support from the President’s Office in the implementation of the pilot test in the Republic of Korea, and in producing the case study to highlight good practices and suggest ways forward in the implementation of the Guidelines on statistics concerning cooperatives.
Mr. Choi also briefed the President’s Office about the general discussion on the SSE that will be held during the International Labour Conference in 2022. Among the issues discussed was the possible participation of a representative from the Social Economy department in the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF) to the committee that will hold the general discussion on SSE at the 110th session of the conference along with the Ministry of Economy and Labour (MOEL) representatives.
The discussions also touched upon the Korean government’s position around the proposed UN Resolution on the SSE. The government officials were briefed about the Social and Solidarity Economy for Sustainable Development (SSE-for-SDGs) project of the United Nations Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE).
Following the meeting with the President’s Office, Mr. Choi met with Mr. Duseon Hong, the Director General for SSE Policy at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF) to discuss the steps to be undertaken around the cooperative statistics component of the project. Mr. Hong responded positively to the request for collaboration and support, and suggested follow up meetings involving relevant stakeholders in the coming weeks.
ILO COOP will continue to foster collaboration with the Korean government to promote cooperatives and wider SSE at the global level.
