ILO and Belgium reiterated commitment to promoting decent work
At a consultation in Brussels, the ILO and the Belgian government and social partners underlined the pivotal role of decent work for sustainable development.

The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, met the Belgian Minister of Employment Monica De Coninck and the Belgian Minister for Public Enterprises and Development Cooperation Jean-Pascal Labille at a bilateral consultation between Belgium and the ILO in Brussels on 28 February. The meeting underlined the pivotal role of decent work, including social protection and social dialogue, for sustainable development.
Guy Ryder thanked Belgium for its long-standing support and active engagement with the ILO. He underlined the importance of a strong coherent and effective multilateral system to achieve the goal of decent work for all. “We have to work with Belgium to make sure that decent work and social protection will be included in the new post 2015 development framework” underscored Guy Ryder.
“Social dialogue is of course an indispensable element of the notion of decent work. Regular consultations between social partners and the government will not only ensure more and better jobs, tripartite dialogue is also central to increasing productivity, avoiding disputes at work and ensuring inclusive economic growth”, said Minister De Coninck. Social dialogue reflects the basic ILO constitutional principle of tripartism, and is thus at the core of ILO action.
Minister Labille highlighted the key role of social protection in underpinning inclusive and sustainable development: “Social protection is an excellent tool to tackle inequalities and poverty, and to create opportunities for an equitable economic growth”. He reiterated Belgium’s commitment to supporting the ILO in promoting the role of social protection as an effective tool to achieve a fairer new development framework.
