ILO and AJI Indonesia launch media competition and award on occupational safety and health (OSH)

JAKARTA (Joint Press Release) – The International Labour Organization (ILO), through the Enhancing COVID-19 Prevention at and through Workplaces, and AJI Indonesia is organizing a media competition and award for journalistic reporting on the issue of occupational safety and health (OSH). The competition is open to journalists from different media backgrounds and freelance journalists in Indonesia underscoring the theme of “Occupational Safety and Health in the Time of the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

The media competition and award was officially launched by Ida Fauziyah, Manpower Minister and Kazuhiko Shimizu, a representative from the Embassy of Japan at a press conference held in Jakarta today (14/12). The competition is organized by ILO’s COVID-19 Prevention project with funding support from the Government of Japan that aims to improve OSH protection by involving public participation and private sectors in shaping COVID-19 risk prevention culture in the workplace.

The launch event is also set to kick start the submission of journalistic works, including articles and photos starting from 14 December to 31 January 2022. The media award will be held on 15 February in line with the commemoration of the National OSH month on 12 January-12 February.

"The role of the media in amplifying the OSH culture and elimination of workplace violence should beyond the national OSH months and echoed by more journalists,” emphasized Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah.

The collaboration is to show appreciation for the journalists’ quality of reporting and coverage on OSH issues during the pandemic. The dissemination of quality public information is an effective way in the community to work together in taking preventive measures for COVID-19.

Kazuhiko Shimizu, Economics Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, underscored that the role of journalists in disseminating information will be the basis for improving occupational safety and health in Indonesia.

This collaboration also aims to promote the OSH culture in all business sectors and levels to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, end the spread of viruses and to achieve decent work for all.

“We hope that the written reports and photojournalism works can raise awareness to workers, employers and the wider community about the importance of OSH culture. It will encourage the efforts in shaping the culture and strengthening the resilience of an OSH management system to prevent future health crises,” said Abdul Hakim, ILO's Project Manager for Enhancing COVID-19 Prevention at and through Workplaces.

There are two media competition categories that are the written or article category (printed or online) and photojournalism work category. The main theme of OSH is divided into the following sub-themes:

• Occupational safety and health and COVID-19
• Occupational safety and health dimension of industry 4.0
• Occupational safety and health and gender
• Occupational safety and health and youth
• Occupational safety and health in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs)
• Investment in occupational safety and health for sustainable development
• Shaping the future of occupational safety and health

A total of 24 selected journalistic works will be awarded. Four first-place and second-place winners for the written and photojournalistic work categories will each receive a certificate of appreciation and 15 million Rupiah for the first winner and 7.5 million Rupiah for the second winner. Meanwhile, the 20 finalists will receive cash prizes of 1.5 million Rupiah.

The journalistic works submitted will be judged by senior journalists and ILO representatives based on the theme, originality of ideas, depth of data and writing to the presentation of journalistic works.
