ILO to address the main challenges facing the world of work in the post-pandemic period at a new edition of the Sustainable Development Forum
Two events organized by the ILO will be part of the agenda of the sixth meeting of this Forum, and will highlight the current labor challenges and the strategies to be implemented to promote decent work and sustainable development.

Santiago, Chile - As part of the sixth meeting of the Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Countries on Sustainable Development 2023, organized by ECLAC, the International Labour Organization will hold two events that seek to highlight the challenges that persist in labor issues in the post-pandemic period and the strategies that countries can implement to move towards sustainable development.
The first event, to be held on Wednesday, April 26, will share the main findings of the ILO's regional report: "Labor Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean" and then hold a discussion on the main challenges facing the region in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG8 on Economic Growth and Decent Work.
In this regard, the Director of the ILO Office for the Southern Cone of Latin America, Fabio Bertranou, said: "The COVID-19 pandemic left important consequences in the world of work while productive transformations and the organization of work have continued to deepen. This context calls for a rethinking of the social contract in terms of labor institutions, including collective bargaining, working time, job training and skills development, social protection, within a framework of productivity improvement and just transition processes".
Claudia Coenjaerts, Regional Director (a.i.) ILO Americas; José Manuel Salazar-Xinirachs, ECLAC Executive Secretary; Michelle Muschett, UNDP Regional Director and representatives of employers' and workers' organizations in the country will be part of this meeting.
A second event, to be held on Thursday, April 27, will present the United Nations initiative: "Global Employment and Social Protection Accelerator" and will offer a space to discuss how it can be implemented in Latin America and the Caribbean, with some specific considerations for the case of Paraguay as a possible country for its early implementation.
The Accelerator seeks to catalyze, develop and implement national strategies that promote sustainable development by bringing together the efforts of different Agencies, Funds and Programs of the United Nations System.

ILO Americas; Garry Conille, Regional Director UNICEF; Michelle Muschett, Regional Director UNDP; Alberto Pacheco, Head of UN Environment Sub-Regional Office for the Southern Cone of Latin America; Carla Bacigalupo; Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Security of Paraguay; Mario Samaja, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Paraguay and Peter Grohmann, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Mexico will participate in this meeting.
Both events will be held at the ILO Office in Santiago and require prior registration at: www.ilo.org/santiago/eventos.
This Forum is the agreed regional mechanism for the follow-up and review of the implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their targets and means of implementation. It involves States, the private sector and civil society, as well as ECLAC subsidiary bodies, development banks, other United Nations agencies and regional integration blocs.
