ILO 100 in Austria

On 6 May, Austria organised in Vienna a high-level national tripartite event to celebrate the ILO Centenary. The event started with a video-message of the Federal President of the Republic of Austria, Mr. Alexander van der Bellen, who highlighted the ILO's contribution to social justice and world peace, and underlined that

in the globalized world, international solutions are needed, and thus the ILO is in greater demand than ever before ”.

Heinz Koller, Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia represented the ILO at this event. He pointed out the successful social model built by the country as well its genuine historical path perfectly illustrated, as he said, by the Ministry of Labour building, "from the formerly War Ministry to the modern Social affairs Ministry along with the Ministry for Digitalisation and Economic Affairs as well as the Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism- past and modernity, from war to the future of work"! He also presented the main findings and recommendations of the Report of Future of Work the Global Commission "Work for a Brighter Future" presented in Geneva in January 2019.

In this connection, Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, Mrs Beate Hartinger-Klein welcomed the Global Commission’s proposal to promote OSH as a new Fundamental Principle and Right at Work. She stressed the importance of Life Long Learning in an increasingly digitalised World of Work.

In the same way, high-level representatives of the Austrian social partners expressed strong support to the ILO and its future work. They reiterated the essential role of the ILO as a global player for social justice and decent work and to set up a level playing field for enterprises and workers in the XXI century.
