ILO’s Programme “Start and Improve Your Business” (SIYB) Helps Advance Entrepreneurship Skills in Georgia

TBILISI (ILO News): The International Labour Organization (ILO) is joining forces with local business development partners to introduce the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) programme in Georgia.
The training was organized in the framework of the project “Inclusive Labour Market for Job Creation in Georgia” financed by the Government of Denmark. Within an estimated outreach in over 100 countries, the SIYB programme is one of the world’s largest programmes focusing on starting and improving small businesses as a strategy for creating more and better employment for women and men, particularly in emerging economies.
On June 17, Kinan Bahnassi, ILO project Chief Technical Adviser (CTA) in Georgia, opened the first SIYB Training of Trainers workshop in Georgia. He congratulated the selected participants on their nominations to become SIYB trainers and thanked the implementing partners of the programme – Enterprise Georgia and Georgian Employers Association.
Mikheil Khidureli, director of Enterprise Georgia, has stated that “our experience with working with small enterprises has shown, that there is a clear need of developing business education and entrepreneurship capacities in the country. Therefore, cooperation with the ILO to introduce SIYB is very timely.” Lasha Labadze, Executive Director of “Georgian Employers Association” (GEA), underlined the importance of the SIYB programme for the country’s economic development and job creation and expressed GEA’s readiness to contribute further to the programme.
Upon the completion of SIYB training, the entrepreneurs will get privileged access to the micro-grant programme, which is offered by Enterprise Georgia. Similarly to persons with disabilities, internally displaced people and women entrepreneurs, graduates of the SIYB training will receive one additional point during the selection process.
For Train-the-Trainers course, 18 most successful trainer candidates have been selected among those nominated by GEA and different Government agencies.
The potential trainers studied two SIYB modules – “Generate Your Business Idea” (GYB) and “Start Your Business” (SYB). Those graduates who will become SIYB certified trainers, will eventually train entrepreneurs around the country, who meet the vulnerability criteria and lack the business education.
Intense 11-day training was facilitated by the Master Trainer who introduced the participants to both SYB and GYB packages as well as to adult learning methodologies through a participatory approach. During the training, every participant delivered a practice session as well as developed their individual action plan.
In order to be certified, each participant had to conduct a demo training to entrepreneurs. This will be done under the supervision of the Master Trainer, allowing the trainer candidate to practice the skills acquired during the training. The demo training will take place in different regions of Georgia in summer of 2019.
