ADDIS ABABA/DAKAR (ILO News) – The International Labour Office (ILO) is to organise a two-day regional strategic meeting on developing the modalities of Africa Region’s Engagement Strategy for Fragile States.
This first edition, convened by Aeneas Chuma, ILO Head for Africa, includes a global discussion on how best to support and operationalize the Africa strategy on engagement in fragile situations in line with ILO flagship Programme on ‘Jobs for Peace & Resilience’.
The meeting, to be attended by ILO Directors of DWT Cairo, Dakar and Yaoundé, as well as Directors of CO-Abidjan, Abuja and Kinshasa, together with colleagues from PARDEV and DEVINVEST, will look at coordination issues in the best interest the world of work in fragile states of Africa.
The strategy for Africa places employment and livelihoods creation explicitly at the core of ILO engagement in fragile states and promotes social protection and strengthening of South-South cooperation.
Participants of the Dakar Meeting are expected to provide concrete recommendations on the implementation process of the Africa Strategy for fragile states, design a resource mobilization plan for partnerships and clearly identify and mitigate risks.
Background information
A state of fragility can be understood as a period of time during nationhood when sustainable socio-economic development requires greater emphasis on complementary peace building and state building activities such as building inclusive political settlements, security, justice, jobs, good management of resources, and accountable and fair service delivery.
