High level forum looks at effects on Malaysia of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)
The impact on Malaysia of the introduction of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 will be discussed at the forum.

BANGKOK (ILO News) – The impact on Malaysia of the introduction of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 will be discussed at a high-level Forum in Putrajaya, Malaysia on Tuesday, 18 November 2014.
The event is expected to be opened by Mr Yoshiteru Uramoto, International Labour Organization (ILO) Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, and Hon. Dato’ Saripuddin Bin Kasim, Secretary General of Ministry of Human Resources (MoHR). The conference is being jointly hosted by ILO and the MoHR.
During the meeting a report will be presented; ‘ASEAN Community 2015: Managing integration for better jobs and shared prosperity’, as well as a related ‘Malaysia Country Brief’. The report, compiled by the ILO and ADB, with support from the ASEAN Secretariat, examines the impact of the AEC on labour markets, and offers evidence-based policy recommendations for better jobs and equitable growth. These include strengthening regional cooperation, facilitating structural change, improving job quality, enhancing skills, boosting productivity and wages, and managing labour migration. The study also looks at possible job gains and losses that may follow from increased integration.
The half-day event will also include a Keynote Address and a High-level Panel Discussion. “The keynote speech, on “Malaysia’s integration into the global/regional economy in the fields of labour and employment” will be delivered by HE Minister, Mr. Richard Riot Anak Jaem. The discussion panel, on “Opportunities and challenges of integration for better jobs and shared prosperity in Malaysia”, will include representatives of the Malaysian Employers Federation, the Malaysian Trade Union Congress, senior Government officials, and representatives from academia.
By 2015 the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), a single common market and production base, will become a reality in the ten ASEAN member States, including Malaysia. A freer flow of goods, services, investment and skilled labour will have an impact on the economy, jobs, skills, wages and labour mobility of Malaysia. However, the report warns that if the benefits of AEC are unevenly distributed and poorly managed, integration could add to existing challenges of poverty, inequality, vulnerability, and poor job quality in the country. Malaysia will hold the Chair of ASEAN in 2015.
