Georgian President Addressed the International Labour Conference in Geneva

Salome Zurabishvili noted that economic and labour rights of people are guaranteed in Georgia to the extent envisaged in the new Constitution. According to the Georgian President, the Constitution also supports the process of aligning the Labour Code with “the principles of the International Labour Organization, EU regulations and the best international practices”.

Salome Zurabishvili said that the new OSH Law “set the highest standards to protect labour rights, provide for effective sanctions, reinforce the authority of labour inspectors on labour issues and change the culture of work”.

In her address, the President also welcomed the adoption by Georgia of the law against discrimination and sexual harassment.

“Equal rights for men and women are among those principles that require unfaltering attention. Being the first female president of Georgia, I believe this to be my personal responsibility”, Salome Zurabishvili said.


In the context of challenges facing Georgia, the President underlined a high level of unemployment, skilled labour shortages, occupational safety and illegal migration.

As part of her visit to Geneva, Salome Zurabishvili held a number of bilateral meetings including with Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization.
