Georgia’s parliament adopts in first reading amendments to Labour Code

On May 7 the Georgian parliament adopted in the first reading amendments to the Labour Code. They will protect workers from groundless layoffs and will help reduce the number of jobless in the country.
According to statistics, 16 percent of Georgia’s population is jobless. Not only young employees, but also people with long work experience go unemployed. Among those who face layoffs are both employees of government and private companies.
“The major amendments seek to make it impossible for employers to dismiss people without solid reasons. Employers’ decision should be well-grounded and comply with the legislation,” said the head of the legal affairs department of the Georgian Justice Ministry, Zurab Sanikidze.
Moreover, overtime work and work on holidays will be paid specially. An employee can get extra day offs instead of monetary compensation.
