Gaziantep University and SADA Women’s Cooperative Holds Joint Workshop
The Shoe-upping Workshop of SADA Women’s Cooperative supported under the Project “Strengthening the Resilience of Syrian Women and Girls” being implemented by UN Women with ILO and ASAM as implementing partners held a 5-day workshop with instructors of the Shoe-Design Department of Naci Topçuoğlu Vocational College of Gaziantep University.

Held on 24-28 June 2019 at the shoe-upping workshop, the event focused on designing a special leather bag, a signature product of SADA Women’s Cooperative and Gaziantep University. The 12 women members of the Cooperative’s shoe-upping workshop including 1 Afghan, 1 Turkish and 10 Syrian citizens, worked with Ms. Sabire Tırpan and Ms. Fatma Nur Akbaş, instructors from Gaziantep University.
The first day of the workshop included informative training on what design was, what a collection was, how to reflect cultural collection onto design. On subsequent days, information was pooled on various materials such as structures, apparel, cultural activities, special events (wedding, engagement, circumcision ceremonies etc.) that reflected Syrian culture, and story boards were formed. Then the participants worked the cultural motifs built on the story boards onto the bags.
As workshop and practical training proceeded, various products were created which reflected women and Syrian culture on the sample bag products. Participants expressed that they were happy to work the historical fabric out of their culture onto the products during the workshop. It was particularly pleasing for the participants that designs came out of their ideas. At the conclusion, participants and instructors had a group photograph with their products.
