Gaza begins Local Economic Recovery activities with ILO support

GAZA STRIP (ILO News) – The ILO has launched its first post-conflict Local Economic Recovery (LER) initiative in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) to improve value chain development and revive Gaza’s fisheries sector. Representatives from the ILO’s International Training Centre in Turin, Italy began the four-day training workshop on November 24 with financial support from the Federal Government of Brazil. Over 30 participants from across the Gaza Strip including representatives from ministries, municipalities, international agencies, cooperatives, unions, academic institutions, as well as local and international nongovernmental organizations are attending the workshop.

“Local economic recovery and value chain development are key elements of economic recovery in post-conflict areas and this training is just the start of a wider response to the situation in the Gaza Strip, as well as throughout the occupied Palestinian territory,” said Mounir Kleibo, the ILO’s representative in the oPt. “Stakeholders across the value chain in the fisheries sector should soon reap the benefits of LER training and we are hopeful that the skills and capacity of those involved can be transferred to other job-creating sectors of the Palestinian economy.”

In addition to value chain development and economic recovery, LER training aims to promote reconciliation and social inclusion through a participatory approach. The training session is part of the ILO project entitled “Supporting Livelihoods and Job Opportunities in the Fishery Sector in Gaza,” which aims to support post-conflict recovery of fisheries in the oPt through capacity building, training and value chain analysis.
