With International Conference of March 30, 2004 in Moscow Agricultural Academy n.a. K.A.Timiryazev the first stage of the UNDP Project “Programme for developing private entreprenship in Russian agriculture” has been accomplished.

One of the partners of this project is the International Labour Organisation (ILO), which provides its technical and financial assistance within the project framework. ILO experts made the project concept more precise, developed legal documents for the pilot agricultural consumer co-operative “Meat cattle breeding” of Babyninsky rayon, Kaluga oblast, provided support in its registration and in elaborating the business-plan.
During the conference ILO representatives chaired one of the round table discussions “Rural entrepreneurs and rural co-operatives”, made a special report “Developing of the consumer co-operation in Russian agriculture – achievements and prospects”, which would be published later on as part of the project materials.
At the moment there are more than one thousand marketing, input supply and marketing and other types of service agricultural co-operatives in Russia. “Meat cattle breeding”, created within the project framework, is so far the only co-operative in the country targeting at organising effective marketing of the high quality beef meat by private farmers to the final consumer. At the same time the co-operative is promoting modern technologies of breeding meat cattle, production of the marble meat, putting into operation of cutting and refrigeration facilities. First steps of the co-operative demonstrated high efficiency of the co-operative economic model, price for meat marketed by farmers through the co-operative is much higher than if they market it on their own.
