First National Conference on Green Jobs, New Delhi, 24 - 25 June 2010

New Delhi - (ILO News) India’s first National Conference on Green Jobs will be held in New Delhi on 24 and 25 June 2010.

The conference will discuss emerging trends and issues relating to the creation of new environment friendly employment opportunities and the transformation of existing occupations in the shift towards greener economies. It will be a forum to debate policy options and share inspiring cases from India and around the world.

Key areas of focus in the discussion include the employment and labour market implications of environment and energy related measures, the potential for promoting green jobs and sustainable enterprises in the Indian policy framework, strategies to ensure an equitable transition to greener economies and sectoral sessions related to renewable energy, waste management and green buildings.

The meeting is being organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. It will be opened by Mr. Harish Rawat, Minister of State for Labour & Employment at 0900 hrs. on 24 June 2010, at the Hotel Claridges, Aurangzeb Road, New Delhi.

The two day event will bring together participants from a wide range of government departments/ministries dealing with these issues, state government representatives, employers' and workers' organizations, international agencies, private sector leaders, civil society organizations and research institutes.

Ensuring inclusive growth and development for today and tomorrow is a vital goal: promoting green jobs is an essential part of a strategy to achieve that goal. The ILO is working with the government, social partners and others to produce a comprehensive knowledge base, test tools and practical approaches, and mobilize resources to achieve shared goals of supporting a just transition to a greener economy with decent jobs.
