Exhibition “Agricultural Labour and Being A Child” through Children’s Eyes
Photography Exhibition under Elimination of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture Opens in Ankara for Visits until 24 October.

ANKARA – A photography exhibition themed “Agricultural Labour and Being A Child” through children’s eyes was opened in Ankara under the project “Elimination of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture” implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and General Directorate of Labour (GDL) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MoLSS) with funding from the European Union.
In the context of activities by PIKOLO Association under the project, Ms. Burcu Vardar and Mr. Nazmi Aladağ, professional photography trainers, held a basic photography workshop themed “Agricultural Labour and Being A Child through Children’s Eyes” with the children accompanying families engaging in seasonal agriculture labour at the tent settlements in Polatlı, Ankara. Fifteen children of ages 7 to 15 participating in the workshop photographed their daily lives, environment, living areas and work at fields.
The exhibition featuring the photographs produced in the activity was opened on 18 October 2021 with the participation of children and Ms. Nurcan Önder, General Director of Labour, MoLSS; Ms. Tsvetana Stoycheva, Economic and Social Programme Manager, EU Delegation to Turkey; and Mr. Numan Özcan, Director of the ILO Office for Turkey. Located at the tubular pedestrian overpass at Ankara ASTI (inter-city bus terminal), the exhibition will remain open for visits until 24 October 2021.
Representing Turkey’s largest ever initiative in addressing combating child labour, the 40-month project of 29.7m€ budget aims to field a series of actions to the benefit of many children who migrate with their families in seasonal agriculture and are already working or under the risk of working in agriculture. Work is undertaken to reach out working children, families, employers, school administrators, teachers, mukhtars (village/neighbour masters) and agricultural intermediaries to withdraw children from labour and redirect them to schooling, as well as strengthen the capacities of national and local institutions.
Being implemented in the provinces of Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Adana, Mersin, Hatay, Izmir, Manisa, Ankara, Eskişehir, Konya, Malatya, Ordu, Bursa and Düzce which are the top sending and recipient provinces of seasonal agricultural workers, the Project provides 12,000 children with on-site training, counselling and rehabilitation services; assistance in the form of educational and stationary materials, hygiene kits, clothing and food; improves living conditions of seasonal agricultural workers and families at settlement areas; refers the family members of children working or under the risk of working in seasonal agriculture to vocational training programmes to build life and work skills; and delivers training on the relevant legislation and the adverse impact of child labour in seasonal agriculture to 200 agricultural intermediaries, 500 employers and 200 village mukhtars.
In the context of project activities in the summer of 2021 in Ankara, Social Support Centres were established through the summer which engaged in identifying and referring children formal education at the start of the academic year 2021-2022. Children identified in the tent settlements in Polatlı and Şereflikoçhisar districts of Ankara were referred to nearest schools offering transported education, and provided with hygiene materials, clothing, food, stationery and transport support as needed.
