Evidence-based assessment models simulate a greener future in Egypt

Cairo (ILO News)- Over four days, policymakers, statisticians, and researchers came together for a hands-on training on the Just Transition Assessment Model (JTAM) Egypt titled (JTAM-e3.eg). The JTAM model digitally simulates the application of possible policies, enabling evidence-based planning for green and climate action to strengthen Egypt’s transition to a more sustainable economy.

Organized by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation (MoPEDIC) in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of the Advancing the Decent Work Agenda in North Africa (ADWA’) project funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), the training introduced participants to the JTAM model, a tool that helps assess how climate and economic policies impact jobs, gross domestic product (GDP), energy demand and emissions.

Experts from the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS) and the ILO’s Just Transition Programme guided participants through practical exercises, showing them how to model different scenarios and analyse real-world data.

Marek Harsdorff, Technical Officer, ILO Just Transition Programme, highlighted the importance of the training:
"The Just Transition Assessment Model is more than just a tool- it is a way to ensure that climate policies are not only good for the planet but also for people’s jobs and livelihoods. With this training, national partners now have the capacity to run policy scenarios that maximize job creation, upskill workers, and provide social protection."

By strengthening national capacity, this workshop ensures that Egypt’s green transition is based on informed decision-making. With the ability to simulate policy impacts, national experts can now develop strategies that support sustainable growth while safeguarding jobs and livelihoods.
