European Parliament delegation discusses response to the crisis with ILO Director-General
A high-level delegation of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) of the European Parliament visited the ILO headquarters in Geneva on 12 November 2012. The delegation met the ILO Director-General Guy Ryder and discussed – among other things – the response to the crisis in Europe and in the world, the implementation of social protection floors, the promotion of the Convention on domestic work and recent ILO initiatives on the Arab Spring.

The delegation, led by the Chair of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee, Pervenche Berès, was composed of the coordinators for employment and social affairs of the political parties present in the Committee: Csaba Öry (EPP) Alejandro Cercas (S&D) and Marian Harkin (ALDE), as well as MEPs Jean Lambert (Greens/ EFA) and Jutta Steinruck (S&D).
The delegation met with the ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder. They discussed the recommendations of the ILO regarding an adequate response to the financial economic and social crisis. In a press release, the delegation stated that "the ILO should play a greater role in the crisis of the Eurozone, in particular in relation to the Troika".
MEPs also discussed other relevant issues such as youth employment, the promotion of the ILO Convention on domestic workers, the Maritime Labour Convention, the implementation of the new Recommendation on social protection floors, the actual situation of international labor standards in the EU and recent ILO initiatives on the Arab Spring.
