Ethiopia and ILO discuss labour migration and pro-youth employment policies
A first bilateral meeting between Aeneas C. Chuma, ILO Regional Director for Africa and H.E. Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia, on job creation for youth and labour migration.

ADDIS ABABA (ILO News) - Aeneas Chapinga Chuma, Assistant Director-General and Regional Director for Africa of the International Labour Office (ILO) and Tedros Adhanom, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia, met for the first time in Addis Ababa to discuss and promote a job-rich growth, pro-youth employment policies in Ethiopia and Africa at large.
During the meeting, the Regional Director outlined priorities for the ILO in the African region, including labour migration, support to fragile states and youth employment.
Dr Tedros stressed that creating job opportunities through entrepreneurship was an important element of Ethiopia's strategy to fight poverty.
Supporting the agricultural sector, promoting initiatives on green investments and inclusive development, stimulating small and medium size enterprises, developing human capital through education are amongst the pro-youth employment policies encouraged by Ethiopia.
The Minister highlighted the key issue of labour migration emphasizing the situation of Ethiopian domestic workers in the Gulf States.
The Government of Ethiopia will enhance its efforts in creating awareness on the adverse consequences of illegal migration as well as tackling its structural causes, underscored the Minister.
Mr. Chuma reiterated ILO’s commitment to enhance its technical collaboration with Ethiopia in priority areas such as labour migration, youth employment and entrepreneurship.
Ethiopia has been a Member State of the ILO for more than 90 years.
