AMMAN (ILO News) - On the fourth anniversary of the adoption of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Violence and Harassment Convention, 2019 (No. 190), the ILO, in collaboration with the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU), has launched a social media campaign in Jordan.

The objective of this campaign is to reinforce the right of workers to a workplace free from violence and harassment and to garner public support for legislation that protects and upholds these rights for both women and men.

Violence and harassment are widespread issues globally, impacting millions of people, especially women. Jordan acknowledges the significance of prevention and protection and has taken significant measures to tackle these challenges. The social media campaign, titled "Ensuring the Right to a Workplace Free from Violence and Harassment," aims to raise awareness and advocate for the establishment of safe and respectful working environments for all individuals.

Workplace violence and sexual harassment are prevalent phenomena that challenge equality and have adverse effects on victim’s compensation, career advancement and working conditions. They can also discourage individuals, particularly women, from remaining in the labour force, extending gender stereotypes and contributing to the gender labour force participation gap and the gender pay gap.

The campaign will utilize various social media platforms to disseminate informative content, personal stories, and testimonials from survivors of workplace violence and harassment. By sharing these compelling narratives, the campaign aims to shed light on the issue and emphasize the urgent need for action.

The ILO Violence and Harassment Convention, 2019 (No. 190), provides a crucial framework for addressing these issues and fostering a culture of respect and equality in the workplace. It defines violence and harassment as a range of unacceptable behaviors that aim at, result in, or are likely to result in physical, psychological, sexual, or economic harm. The convention applies to all sectors, including public or private, formal or informal, urban or rural.

The ILO, in collaboration with social partners, employers, and the government, remains committed to promoting a work environment that upholds dignity, equality, and safety for all workers. Through collective efforts, legislation, and awareness campaigns like this, Jordan is making significant strides towards creating a world of work where violence and harassment have no place.
