Empowering Youth: Raising Awareness on Human Rights and Child Labour in Western Cape Schools

As part of our ongoing commitment to combat child labour and promote children's rights, the International Labour Organization, in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Labour as well as the Department of Education, recently conducted a series of outreach missions across various educational institutions in the Western Cape.

This initiative was aimed at primary and secondary schools, encompassing both Afrikaans and Xhosa-speaking schools in rural areas such as De Doorns, Paarl, and Ceres, reaching approximately 900 students. missions spanned from primary to high schools, including both Afrikaans and Xhosa-speaking schools, in rural regions such as De Doorns, Paarl and Ceres, targeting around 900 students.

The primary goal of these outreach missions was to educate and raise awareness about key concepts related to human rights, children's rights, and the gender dimensions of child labour. The outreach teams utilized a specially developed information package designed by the ILO to communicate these complex topics in a manner accessible to students of different ages. This included a focus on the status of implementing relevant international standards, ensuring that children understand their rights and the protections available to them.

To enhance the effectiveness of the outreach, the ILO and the Department of Labour and Employment distributed children-friendly brochures and information packages. These materials were tailored to address the unique needs of young audiences, focusing on human rights, child labour, and the specific gender dimensions that often accompany child labour practices. The aim was to empower children with the knowledge needed to recognize and combat these issues within their communities.

The outreach missions served as awareness-raising sessions, educating the most important project stakeholders—children—on the key international instruments ratified by South Africa. These sessions highlighted the status of these instruments and focused on children's rights and protections against child labour, including its worst forms.

Through these outreach missions, the ILO and the Department of Labour and Employment are committed to fostering a deeper understanding of human rights, children's rights, and the fight against child labour. By engaging with schools across the Western Cape, this initiative aims to create a well-informed youth population that is equipped to advocate for their rights and contribute to the ongoing efforts to eliminate child labour in all its forms.
