YEREVAN (ACTRAV INFO)-The transition from informal to formal economy needs a strong social dialogue, according to the conclusions of a sub-regional meeting on informal economy, organized by the Pan-European Regional Council of the International Trade Union Confederation (PERC-ITUC) and the ILO’ Bureau for Workers Activities (ACTRAV) supported by the ACTRAV/Norway project “Trade Unions for Social Justice".
Participants shared experiences about the informal economy in their countries and explained trade union activities within tripartite bodies and efforts to attract informal economy employees to trade unions.
The meeting drew up a series of recommendations from the region’s trade unions in conjunction with the preparations for the discussions of the ILO’s new recommendation on the transition from the informal to the formal economy at the International Labour Conference in 2015.
Recommendations mainly included: the enhancement of the role of social dialogue to combat informal economy, the development of new approach to formalise informal economy in Decent Work country programmes (DWCP), the improvement of cooperation between tripartite constituents to develop country-specific responses. In addition, participants also recommended improving the methodology for determining the status of unemployed and self-employed in the informal economy.
Held in Yerevan (Armenia) from 17 to 19 September, the sub-regional meeting gathered together union leaders, ILO and PERC experts.
