Domestic workers celebrate International Day in Myanmar

The 600 domestic workers, factory cleaners, and other workers present were also celebrating the recent lifting of the ban imposed on Myanmar domestic workers going overseas. Two domestic workers, one returned from Singapore and one a veteran domestic worker in Myanmar shared their experiences on stage with the chat show host and highlighted the need for good laws to be in place to protect the labour rights and living conditions of domestic workers. They were very excited when U Tin Maung Tun, Chair of the Regional Yangon Parliament and U Kyaw Htway, Chair of the Immigration, Local and Overseas Workers Affairs Committee, Amoytha Hluttaw, committed to working on such laws in the near future. The event included quizzes and games, and a graduation ceremony for first group of eight domestic workers who had successfully passed a five week skills training including nutrition, hygiene and cookery at the Three Good Spoons supported by the ILO. At the end of the day, celebrity singer, L Seng Z had the crowd singing and dancing with her before they had to face the monsoon rains to get back home.
