Decent work high on ILO Director-General’s agenda in Timor-Leste
Guy Ryder to address major decent work issues in meetings with employers, workers and government during a 3-day visit

DILI (ILO News): The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, is to discuss decent work related issues in Timor-Leste during a tripartite meeting on Monday, 15 December.
The ILO tripartite constituents, the State Secretariat for Vocational Training and Employment Policy (SEPFOPE), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (CCI-TL) and the Confederation of Trade Unions of Timor-Leste (KSTL), will actively participate in the meeting.
“I am pleased to visit Timor-Leste for the first time and to meet key Timorese partners. As an emerging country, Timor-Leste is moving forward to generate long-term sustainable employment,” said Ryder. “I appreciate the will and the energy displayed by the government, employers’ and workers’ organizations to place decent work as a goal for the country,” he added.
The meeting will discuss ways to strengthen the already rich and fruitful relations between the ILO and the Timor-Leste constituents in implementing the decent work agenda.
Stepped-up momentum
Meanwhile, commenting on the visit, Peter van Rooij, Country Director of the ILO in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, said that “the visit represents important momentum for both ILO and Timor-Leste.”
Ryder, who will visit Timor-Leste from 14-16 December, also appreciates SEPFOPE for the proposal for ratification of the ILO Conventions Nos. 100 and 111.
The ILO and Timor-Leste have collaborated very closely since the country became the ILO’s 177th member State on 19 August 2003. To date, Timor-Leste has ratified a total of four ILO Conventions: ILO Convention No. 29 on Forced Labour, No. 87 on Freedom of Association, No. 98 on Collective Bargaining and No. 182 on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour.
