Decent work high on ILO Director-General’s agenda in Indonesia

Guy Ryder to address major job issues in meetings with employer, worker and government stakeholders during a 3-day visit

JAKARTA (ILO News): The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Guy Ryder, is to discuss major employment issues, including decent work, in Indonesia during a meeting hosted by the Ministry of Manpower on Thursday, 11 December.

The main tripartite ILO constituents will take part, including the Minister of Manpower and his governmental officials, the Chair of the Indonesian Employers’ Association (Apindo) and Heads of the Trade Union Confederations.

“I am pleased to visit Indonesia for the first time and to meet key labour actors of the country. As a middle income country, Indonesia plays a crucial economic and employment role in Asia,” said Ryder. “I appreciate the will shown by the government, employers’ and workers’ organizations to place decent work as a goal for the country,” he added.

The meeting will discuss ways to strengthen relations between the ILO and the Government of Indonesia as well as other relevant stakeholders in ensuring the decent work for all including. Participants will also consider how the ILO can facilitate dialogue and other cooperation between workers and employers.

Stepped-up momentum

Meanwhile, commenting on the visit, Peter van Rooij, Country Director of the ILO in Indonesia, said that “the visit represents important momentum for both ILO and Indonesia, especially for the new cabinet of the Indonesian government.”

Ryder, who will visit Indonesia from 10-13 December, also congratulated newly-appointed Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri on his new role.

Indonesia and the ILO have collaborated closely since the country became a member of the ILO on 12 June 1950. To date, Indonesia has ratified a total of 19 ILO Conventions. Indonesia was also the first Asian country and the fifth country in the world to ratify all fundamental Conventions.
