Chile renews its commitment to the promotion of occupational safety and health by ratifying a fundamental convention

GENEVA (ILO NEWS) – On 10 June 2025, Chile’s Minister of Labour, Mr. Giorgio Boccardo, presented the instrument of ratification of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) to the ILO Director-General, Mr. Gilbert Houngbo.

When receiving the instrument of ratification, Mr. Houngbo, declared: “This ratification reaffirms once again Chile’s commitment to the fundamental principle and right to a safe and healthy working environment. Chile has now completed the ratification of the eleven fundamental ILO standards. I sincerely welcome this step, which reflects the country’s strong commitment to international labour standards, social justice, and the continuous and sustainable promotion of occupational safety and health, with the aim of preventing occupational accidents and diseases".

In June 2022, at its 110th session, the International Labour Conference of the ILO adopted the Resolution on the inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work, which declared Conventions Nos 155 and 187 to be part of the fundamental Conventions.

The Convention will enter into force for Chile on 10 June 2026, one year after its ratification. To date, Chile has ratified 66 Conventions and one Protocol. For further information, see NORMLEX.
