Chile: National Occupational Safety and Health Profile proposal is presented
Authorities highlighted the importance of having such tool, which allows identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the national OSH system and the possible of existing gaps with international standards and comparative experience.
Santiago, Chile - With the presence of national authorities, government representatives, employers' and workers' organizations, a workshop was held this Thursday at the ILO headquarters with the main objective of presenting to the national tripartite actors the proposed contents of the National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Profile, in order to obtain their input and validation in a participatory process.
The meeting was inaugurated by the Director of the ILO Office in Santiago, Fabio Bertranou, and the Undersecretary of Social Security, Christian Larraín, who stressed the importance of having such a tool. They stated that this Profile will make possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the different elements of the national OSH system and possible gaps with international standards and comparative experience, so that the tripartite actors can define, at a later stage, the priority issues for the revision and updating of the national OSH policy and program announced by the Minister of Labor and Social Protection.
Then, Carmen Bueno, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist of the ILO Office in Santiago, presented the main strengths, challenges and recommendations arising from this proposal, highlighting in particular that the information presented in this Profile is the result of a process that began in August 2022 with the collection of quantitative information, but also included a qualitative component through interviews held with 72 representatives belonging to 29 institutions or organizations relevant to the subject, in order to know their visions and collect their inputs.
Subsequently, a panel composed by: Pamela Gana, Superintendent of Social Security; Pablo Bobic, Legal Manager of the Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC), Horacio Fuentes, Head of the United Central of Workers´ (CUT) Occupational Safety and Health Secretariat, and moderated by Patricia Roa, ILO Programming Officer, shared their initial assessments of the proposal. The activity concluded with comments and contributions from other participants.

A National Occupational Safety and Health Profile is a diagnostic tool that involves the systematic review and evaluation of the full range of occupational safety and health (OSH) instruments and resources available in a country, including the evolution of occupational accidents and diseases.
