Antalya (ILO News)-The Project on “Promoting Decent Work for Syrians under Temporary Protection and Turkish Citizens” convened its 14 implementing partners from unions of chambers of tradesmen and craftsmen and municipalities across 18 provinces of Türkiye and coordinating partners from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and its key agencies and directorates: the Directorate for International Labour Force (DGILF), Social Security Institution (SSI) and Turkish Employment Agency (ISKUR) on 12-13-14 December 2023 in Antalya. The purpose of the meeting was to exchange experiences and to discuss how to provide better access to decent work for all, including the most vulnerable people in Türkiye.

The-three-days coordination meeting provided a platform where best practices and lessons learned were discussed. This, in turn, established the basis for improved next steps for providing support to sustain decent jobs. The sessions were focused on the issues of accountability, ensuring equality in the workplace, challenges of formalization of jobs, improving outreach, equality and eliminating discrimination at the workplace.

ILO Ankara Director, Mr. Yasser Ahmed Hassan remarked in his opening speech “The ILO is among the oldest international organizations established in 1919. It defines decent work as productive work, with conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. The global labour force is going through an unprecedented transformation, and we believe that our work in the ground contributes to enhance resilience to meet the challenges of this transformation. We need to learn from each other’s experience when overcoming the challenges of providing decent work for all”.

Project Manager Emily Harwit said, “We are here together to discuss various issues including - but not limited to - the elements of the ILO values, accountability, monitoring, our results regarding work permit and formality issues, and to look toward the future. We believe that our work in the ground will provide access to decent work for all and we are here to join our forces to do this”.

The project is implemented during 2019-2025 by the ILO Office for Türkiye in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and its key agencies and directorates, including the Directorate for International Labour Force (DGILF) and Social Security Institution (SSI), with unions of chambers of tradesmen and craftsmen and municipalities. Through the project, the ILO Office for Türkiye supports filling labour market gaps; contributing to social security benefits; creating new jobs; diversifying the work place; and providing consultancies on work force formalization.
