Cambodia TVET sector addresses growing demand for skilled workers through South-South Cooperation

BANGKOK (ILO News) – Cambodia’s skills experts and trainers are seizing emerging opportunities in skills training through the South-South Cooperation Skills Development Network.

Supported by the ILO/China Partnership Programme, a delegation from the National Polytechnic Institute of Angkor completed the “Capacity Building and Partnership Discussion” programme, held at the Hainan Technician College in Haikou City, China, on 1-11 July 2024.

The initiative, designed to equip the Cambodian delegation with the knowledge and resources needed to elevate their training programmes to international standards, involved a series of discussions, observations, and training sessions.

The delegation, consisting of five trainers and a head of delegation, visited OUBEN Food (Hainan) Co. Ltd., Well Lead Medical Co. Ltd., Hainan Huayan Collagen Technology Co. Ltd., and Kangdi Electric Car (Hainan) Co. Ltd. They learned about these companies' innovative approaches to integrating skills training with their operational needs and discussed potential collaborative projects.

A specialized training session provided by Hainan Technician College focused on areas such as welding, graphic design, cloud computing, and mechatronics. The delegation had the opportunity to learn from Chinese experts who have excelled in international competitions, fostering an exchange of best practices and innovative approaches.

With Cambodia’s labour force projected to expand significantly over the next decade, this capacity-building initiative is a visionary step toward creating a more skilled and competitive Cambodian workforce.

“The visit underscored the importance of aligning vocational education with industry requirements, ensuring that students are equipped with relevant skills for the job market,” said Tian Feng, Project Manager and Coordinator, ILO/China Partnership Programme. “By leveraging international cooperation and best practices, Cambodia is poised to enhance its vocational training landscape, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic competitiveness in the global market.”
