Cambodia’s trade unions acquire skills to support transition to green economy

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (ILO News) – Trade unions in Cambodia have strengthened their capacity to support green skills and jobs across key national industries with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In all, 77 trade union representatives, including 30 women, participated in a workshop in Phnom Penh held 19-20 May 2025 focusing on proactive approaches to support Cambodia’s transition to a green economy.

The event, titled “Green Skills and Green Jobs,” underscored the vital role of trade unions in ensuring a just and inclusive transition in line with Cambodia’s environmental goals.

Supported by the ILO-China Partnership Programme on Skill Development and conducted in cooperation with the National Trade Union Council, the training utilised an innovative participatory methodology, encouraging active engagement beyond conventional lectures.

Reflecting on the impact, Channareth Phalla, a union representative, stated: “Before this workshop, I didn’t fully understand how the environment connects to workers’ rights. Now, I see that promoting green practices also means protecting the health and safety of our members.”

“I’m now confident to talk to my members about simple green actions, like reducing waste and using resources wisely. These small steps can lead to bigger change,” she added.

Tun Sophorn, the ILO National Coordinator in Cambodia, commented: “Trade unions are key to advancing green jobs and ensuring a just transition. By equipping their members with the right skills and advocating for decent, safe, and inclusive work, unions can help shape policies that support a sustainable and fair economy. The workshop not only reinforced the strategic role of trade unions in the climate agenda but also equipped them with tools and strategies to take proactive steps toward green transition.”

He further noted: “As Cambodia continues to implement its climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and its Nationally Determined Contributions, a well-informed and mobilised labour movement will be essential to ensuring that this transition is inclusive, fair and benefits both workers and the environment.”
