Business and Human Rights in Namibia

The ILO, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and the Labour Resource and Research Institute (LaRRI) attended a discussion forum on the topic of “Business and Human Rights” with representatives of the British Business Group (BBG) in Namibia.
On the invitation of the British High Commission to Namibia, the Director of the ILO Office Pretoria, Mr Vic van Vuuren, together with the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and the Director of the Labour Resource and Research Institute (LaRRI), participated in the experience sharing event on the application of good labour practices in Namibia.
The Namibian practice and the international perspective along the broader lines of the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGP) on Business and Human Rights were debated.
Mr van Vuuren emphasised the need to respect international labour standards and practices in businesses and along supply chains as a means to promote sustainable development.
“By having a solid base of labour standards coupled to a process of sound social dialogue countries will be better positioned to deal with the challenges of job creation and social security safety nets which in effect reduces poverty levels on a more sustainable basis” Van Vuuren said.
