Building effective social dialogue and labour relations practices can change the business world in Georgia
More than eighty trade union leaders, members and activists across different regions in Georgia have improved their knowledge and benefited from organizing a series of capacity building workshops on social dialogue and labour relations.

TBILISI (ILO News) – The workshops aimed to introduce the principles of social dialogue and labour relations and their contribution to the country’s development in light of the serious challenges confronting the economy to create employment while improving working conditions and access to justice for all. The participants discussed the relevant ILO tools and international conventions, focusing on challenges relevant to Georgia, such as gender equality and pay gap, maternity leave, occupational safety and health, recruitment and more. Furthermore, the workshops have presented global practices in labour dispute prevention and resolution mechanisms.
The workshops were organized in Batumi from 28 February to 1 March 2019, in Kutaisi on 11-12 March 2019, in Rustavi from 27 March to 28 March, and in Tbilisi on 6-7 May. They were held in the framework of the project “Inclusive Labour Market for Job Creation in Georgia” funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).
The capacity building workshops were attended by representatives of the Georgian Trade Union Confederation (GTUC), as well as transport, forestry, metallurgy, public service, textile workers and medial workers unions from different regions of the country.
“The outcomes of these workshops have opened a more active role for social partners in discussions on measures to be taken concerning the informal economy, skills policies, employment policies, and gender equality. Capacity building activities and disseminating information via data collection, specific training, research support offered by the ILO project could enhance discussions at the workshops”, said Kinan Bahnassi, ILO project, Chief Technical Adviser in Georgia.
“The ongoing series of seminars in “Social Dialogue and Labour Relations”, under auspices of ILO, are important activities aimed at raising awareness of union members and workers, increase their understanding of the concept of the social dialogue, gain relevant skills, receive information on international and national standards of guaranteed labour rights.”, said Irakli Petriashvili, president of GTUC.
