Brazil and ILO announced new South-South cooperation
Two countries in Africa and two in Latin America will benefit from a new project that aims to promote decent work in the cotton industry, and that deepens the horizontal cooperation that has developed through ILO and Brazil over the last decade.
GENEVA (ILO news) - The cooperation program between Brazil and the ILO to promote South-South and triangular cooperation has channeled more than $ 20 million in a decade, mainly to countries in Africa and Latin America, according to a report presented today at a special meeting scheduled on the sidelines of the 104th International Labour Conference.
This amount includes some $ 6.8 million covered by a new horizontal cooperation initiative announced Wednesday in Geneva at a meeting in which participated the Minister of Labour and Employment of Brazil, Manoel Dias, as well as representatives of organizations employers and workers in that country.
The new project for the cotton industry is the largest amount of resources allocated in the framework of the Brazil-ILO program, the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jose Manuel Salazar.
The main priority is to identify cotton-producing countries interested in participating in the initiative. Work plans based on the experiences and knowledge of both Brazil and the ILO will be developed to help improve working conditions in the sector including key issues such as efforts to eradicate forced labor and child labor.
Special attention will also be given to global supply chains, which is a key to addressing the challenges of decent work in the cotton industry. According to the report, between 2005 and 2015 the South-South cooperation program of Brazil and the ILO, it has delivered some $ 21.3 million to various stakeholders, including beneficiaries from Africa, Latin America and Timor Leste.
