Boosting Social Dialogue and Trade Unionism in Liberia
The International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and Africa Regional Organisation of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) provided support for the convening of Liberia Labour Congress 3rd National Delegates Convention and the promotion of effective trade unionism.

MONROVIA (ILO News) - The Liberia Labour Congress (LLC) elected its new executive officers for the next four years. The ILO, OATUU and ITUC-Africa welcomed the electoral process which was conducted during the LLC’s 3rd National Delegates Congress in Monrovia, Liberia from 25 – 29 September, 2017.
Mr. David Dorkenoo, who represented the Director of ILO Country Office for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and Liaison Office for ECOWAS, Mr. Dennis Zulu, congratulated the LLC for successfully electing new executive members to lead the LLC for the next four years. He noted that it was unfortunate the LLC had experienced an impasse which had hindered effective working relationship among LLC members, affiliates and partners. He commended the delegates for demonstrating a peaceful disposition during the election and for implementing the road map that was agreed upon by all parties. He reiterated ILO’s commitment to supporting the organisation and working towards building a more effective LLC in 2018.
Mr Dorkenoo reminded LLC leaders and members of the need to remain independent, representative and democratic while embarking on membership drive. He reminded them of trade union’s mandate and emphasized the need for it to endeavour to defend and protect its members and their interests.
He concluded by acknowledging the role and support of two other continental organisations, OATUU and ITUC-Africa, and commended them for collaborating with the ILO to resolve the crisis that bedevilled the organization.
In his message to LLC, the Secretary General of OATUU, Comrade Arezki Mezhoud urged LLC to work towards building the LLC into a formidable organization that is able to represent the interest of its members both at the bargaining table and on all socio-economic and political levels of the country. He encouraged them to do their best to solve their internal challenges locally through dialogue and to avoid tarnishing the image of the LLC.
The General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, Comrade Kwasi Adu-Amankwah in his remarks, urged the LLC to position itself as the sole trade union centre in Liberia that is able to effectively coordinate all activities of trade unions in Liberia. He expressed the need to organize public sector workers into the trade union movement in Liberia and be proactive in contributing positively to the development of the country.
Speaking on behalf of the elected officials, the president of the LLC, Comrade Alfred Summerville, thanked the ILO, OATUU and ITUC-Africa for their contribution towards resolving the crisis that hampered progress in LLC. He urged them not to relent in supporting the organization to achieve its goals. He also called for the cooperation of its members to enable them build a virile trade union organization.
