Belgian government hosts seminar on the Future of work
The Belgian Federal Public Service for Employment, Labour and Social Dialogue organized a two-day seminar on the Future of work, in light of the ILO’s centenary in 2019.

The seminar brought together the social partners, experts from academia and the ILO. The participants discussed four key topics: the impact of financialization on production processes and supply chains, the transformational effect of big data on the world of work, the emerging performance society, and the role and future of international labour standards in relation to new forms of labour.
The debates constituted the first stage of Belgium’s tripartite contribution to the ILO’s centenary initiative on the Future of work.
Belgian Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Employment, Economy and Consumer Affairs, Kris Peeters, and ILO Director-General Guy Ryder opened the conference and delivered a keynote speech.
The Director-General pointed to the current perception that the world of work is on the brink of transformative change, which is driven by technology, demography, labour mobility and globalization, to name a few.
“The question is how we will manage these emerging issues and trends, and design the circumstances in which they operate, respecting the basic principles of social justice,” said Guy Ryder. “We need to embrace these changes and work out policy responses that respect the notion of social justice.”
