Please join us at the national consultation seminar in Nepal, jointly organised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the OECD Development Centre and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The presentation, panel and plenary discussion will focus on how to assess the economic contribution of labour immigration in the country.

This seminar is a kick-off event of the project “Assessing the economic contribution of labour migration in developing countries as countries of destination”, supported by the European Union. This project aims at not only assessing the economic impact in the ten partner countries in isolation, but also at sharing experiences and knowledge among developing countries. The seminar in Nepal being the last seminar of the project, earlier seminars were held in 3 Latin American countries, 4 African countries and 2 Asian countries – Thailand and Kyrgyzstan.

About 3.5% of Nepal’s total population (2010) are immigrants. This seminar will serve as a platform for dialogue on the importance of labour immigration and its linkage to development. It is aimed at identifying key stakeholders, research priorities, available data sources in Nepal as well as knowledge gaps.

The event includes interactive sessions on the immigration policy framework in Nepal and research on the economic impact of immigration in the country and will conclude with a session on the implementation of the project. Speakers will represent several ministries and government agencies, workers’ and employers’ associations, and academics, including:

• H.E. Rensje Teerink, Ambassador, European Union Delegation to Nepal
