ILO News (Addis Ababa): The International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin, Italy, in collaboration with ILO CO Addis Ababa, provides training that equips Ethiopian judges and legal educators with the knowledge that will enable them to use international labour law sources at national level.
The training was organized in response to an analysis that shows several domestic courts are hesitating less and less to draw not only on international labour Conventions and Recommendations, but also on the work of the ILO’s supervisory bodies to interpret and complement their domestic law.
In order to address this gap, the training aims to:
provide in-depth knowledge of the instruments and supervisory machinery of the ILS system;
equip participants with tools to use the analysis and pronouncements of the ILO’s supervisory bodies;
provide tools that help determine when and how domestic judges can use international labour law to solve labour disputes;
provide tools that enable identify and make use of ILS in key areas such as freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining, non-discrimination in employment and occupation, termination of employment;
equip with the know how to use ILO and ITCILO databases on ILS and case-law relying on ILS.
The training will enable participants to use the sources of international labour law at national level, including the ILS system, main characteristics of ILO standards, the ILS procedures from international drafting to national application, the work of the ILO’s supervisory bodies, the content of ILS on freedom of association and legal educators the right to collective bargaining, the content of ILS on equality in employment and occupation; the content of ILS on termination of employment, and ILO and ITCILO databases on ILS and on case-law relying on ILS.
This training course is part of the Project “Building industrial relations for sustainable development and competitiveness in Ethiopia”, which is funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). It is organized and implemented by the Project, in collaboration with the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO) and the ILO International Labour Standards Department (NORMES).
