GENEVA-The secretary-general of Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU-K) Kenya, Francis Atwoli, has called on African governments to support workers and facilitate the implementation of international labour standards in Africa.
“I appeal to African governments to support the working people and work with trade union leaders in Africa to foster rapid and sustainable development of Continent”, said Mr Atwoli, during an African tripartite meeting with the President of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda, held during the 102nd session of the International Labour Conference (ILC).
“We want African Leaders to allow and promote the existence of a stronger and dynamic trade union movement, without any interference” .
On behalf of African workers, the leader of COTU-K also underlined the need to implement the international labour standards –in the form of ILO Conventions and Recommendations with the support of governments and social partners.
“African tripartite delegations come here every year-during the ILC- but when they go back to Africa, they do not promote or domesticate the ILO Conventions that are geared towards protecting both employers and workers”, Francis Atwoli stressed.
