1st national prize for journalism in Social Protection in Cape Verde awarded
Organized by the National Institute for Social Protection (INPS), the event honored journalists in radio, television, and print/web for promoting inclusive social protection. Supported by the ILO’s ACTION/Portugal project, the initiative also included journalist training.

PRAIA, Cabo Verde (ILO News) - On July 15, Tech Park, in the city of Praia, hosted the award ceremony of the 1st National Journalism Award in Social Protection. The ceremony highlighted the vital link between journalism and public policy for transformative communication.
The unprecedented initiative in Cape Verde aimed to recognize the quality work carried out by journalists, valuing the role of the media in raising awareness and promoting more inclusive, fair and effective social protection.
This first edition of the award, integrated in the celebrations of the National Social Security Day promoted by the National Institute of Social Security (INPS), was mobilized by journalists and media from all over the country, with works submitted in the three categories to the Radio, Television and Written Press and Web Journalism competition.

Television Category: Deolinda Rodrigues Delgado Freire
Written Press and Web Journalism Category: Sheilla Sofia Lopes Ribeiro
The National Journalism Award in Social Protection was born from the initiative and active involvement of the ACTION/Portugal project of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which from the very beginning technically supported this process, reinforcing its commitment to the promotion of social protection literacy and the strengthening of communication skills in the sector, an example of which was the holding of a course on principles of social protection aimed at journalists in the city of Praia in September 2024.
During the conference, also marked by institutional interventions and cultural moments, the importance of continuously building bridges between journalism and social public policies was reiterated, with a view to promoting a culture of rigorous, accessible and transformative information.
