Social dialogue for sustainable trade and investment, the case of South Africa
When social dialogue functions well, it can connect economic and social policy objectives and strengthens cooperation among government, business, and workers' organisations. Helping align trade and foreign direct investment policies with sustainable growth and decent work. South Africa's National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) shows how this dialogue can be institutionalized nationally, providing a formal forum for government and social partners to engage on economic and social policy. This case study looks at NEDLAC's work on trade and investment, how dialogue is organised through the Trade and Industry Chamber, the Technical Sectoral Liaison Committee (TESELICO), and commissioned research that feeds into policymaking.
