Evidence-Based Policy Making for Decent Work

How can Kiribati develop a national child labour policy?

Executive Summary

Child Labour is a grave problem that affects millions of children worldwide, denying them their fundamental rights, impeding their education, and compromising their physical and mental development. The policy brief aims to highlight frameworks and recommendations on how relevant government organizations and non-government organizations in Kiriba can come together to eliminate child labour in Kiribati. The methodology involves a mixture of data and research from credible sources such as reports from recognised bodies and academic journals. Evidence suggests that despite Kiribati ratifying relevant ILO conventions on Child Labour and amending current labour laws, more needs to be done to address child labour as it is still occurring. As a way forward, it is important that all relevant government and non-governmental bodies work together in harmony through finalising and implementing the Child Labour Committee, strengthening the Labour Inspection Program, advancing legal commitment, improving the Child Labour Database, and engaging the community to promote free education. In doing so, we can provide a better future for the children of Kiribati.
