Young veterinarian turns his dream into a thriving business and career in Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO (ILO News) – For Srđan Todorović, love for animals was never just a hobby – it was a way of life. He grew up in Gradiška, Bosnia and Herzegovina, surrounded by animals. Together with his brother, he learned about their needs and behaviours, and helped care for them. Even back then, he says, he knew that a “a meaningful job” for him had to involve taking care of animals.

Years later, that childhood dream has grown into a profession – and a successful business.

“It was always my wish to start something of my own. My main motivation was the freedom that entrepreneurship brings,” explains Srđan.

Srđan learned about the opportunity to apply for entrepreneurship training through social media. Funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Local Employment Partnership (LEP) II project offers financial assistance for the procurement and modernization of equipment, as well as the ILO's "Start and Improve Your Business" training, designed for people who wish to launch small businesses. Through the programme, he learned how to prepare a business plan, assess local market needs, calculate costs, and manage client relations.

“This knowledge gave me the confidence to move forward and succeed,” he explains.

During his early visits to farms and households, Srđan quickly realised how vital veterinary services are, especially in rural areas where families depend on every animal they own.

Today, he employs one veterinary assistant, serves the wider Gradiška region, and is planning to expand his team and introduce new technologies to improve diagnostics and treatment.

Thanks to his dedicated service, Srđan has built a strong client network. Word-of-mouth recommendations have become the core of his growing business, which he considers as the highest recognition of quality work.

His message to young people, particularly those entering his profession, is clear and encouraging:

Starting your own business is challenging but exciting. If you stay committed and curious, any obstacle can turn into a positive result.

Since 2022, through the EU-funded LEP II project, the ILO has supported the establishment of 306 small businesses and contributed to job creation across Bosnia and Herzegovina, strengthening local partnerships and improving access to employment opportunities.
