This Year’s Theme: “Leave No Child Behind In The Fight Against Human Trafficking”

The theme for this year's observance underscores the urgent need to focus on protecting children from the scourge of human trafficking. It calls for intensified efforts to dismantle trafficking networks, enhance protective mechanisms, and ensure that every child is safeguarded from exploitation.

In Kenya, the situation is equally alarming. A 2022 study by the National Crime Research Centre revealed that 40% of internal trafficking victims and 20% of international trafficking victims are children.

Kenya’s Commitment to Combat Child Trafficking

The Kenyan government is dedicated to addressing child trafficking through a range of initiatives and legislative measures:

• Social Protection Programs: These include the Nutrition Improvement through Cash and Health Education (NICHE) program, cash transfers for orphans and vulnerable children, and the Presidential Secondary Bursary Programme, all designed to support at-risk families and children.
• Legislative Framework: Implementation of Article 53 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya and the Children Act 2022 provides a robust framework for protecting children’s rights and enhancing their safety.
• Dedicated Units: The DCI Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit focuses on investigating crimes against children, including online exploitation.
• National Assistance Trust Fund: This fund supports victims of trafficking and provides income-generating activities for survivors, aiding their recovery and reintegration.
• National Plan of Action (2022-2027): This plan emphasizes Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, and Partnerships to effectively combat trafficking.
