World day against child labour 2024: Egypt's commitment to eradicate child labour

Cairo, July 1, 2024 – Today, Egypt is observing the World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) 2024 with a resounding call to action under the theme "Let’s Act on Our Commitments: End Child Labour." This year's event marks a significant milestone—the 25th anniversary of the adoption of ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour. It also celebrates the universal ratification of Convention No. 138 on the Minimum Age for Admission to Employment or Work, reaffirming a global commitment to protect children's rights.

Today, government officials, NGOs, educators, community leaders, and international representatives, have come together to discuss and develop strategies to end child labour in Egypt. Furthermore, this year’s celebration highlights the collaborative efforts of tripartite constituents and other key stakeholders to adopt and implement the conventions aimed at eliminating child labour. The focus is on accelerating action through the National Action Plan for Combating the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Egypt and Supporting Family (2018-2025). The event also aims to reach child labourers and their families, leveraging the influence and support of various ministries, workers' organizations, private sector actors, employers' organizations, members of parliament, international organizations, development partners, NGOs, media representatives, and journalists to ensure that no one is left behind.

A short documentary on the "World Day Against Child Labour 2023" is also being screened, followed by a presentation on the progress of the National Action Plan for Combating Worst Forms of Child Labour (2018-2025). While at the same time, during the journey, the "Waa’i Programme Awareness Campaign on Combating Child Labour" will be launched, signalling a renewed push for public awareness and action. Another important launch refers to the "Standard Operating Procedures for the Case Management System for Different Categories of Children Involved in Child Labour", which sets a new standard for child protection efforts.

Children cannot be missed in such an important journey, during the event, they will perform a live theatre play, captivating the audience and underscoring the day's themes through the use of the ILO SCREAM methodology. The event also features an acknowledgment of partners implementing the SCREAM intervention programme and recognizes the award-winning documentary from the ACCEL Africa media competition.
