Training of Trainers Workshop ILO core International Labour Standards

This workshop is prompted by the outcome of the last training workshop organized for the Cosatu Young Workers Forum where a strong recommendation was made by both the Cosatu General Secretary and the Young Workers Forum for the young workers to be trained and sensitized about the history of International Labour Organization, and its founding principles expressed through the 8 Core Conventions of the ILO. The sensitization of the young workers of the Standards Setting mandate of the ILO in pursuit of the promotion of social justice was deemed essential to the broader efforts at orientating the young workers to the decent work agenda.
In order to assist COSATU Youth Leadership in its plan to promote awareness on the eight core Conventions at large in the country, the ILO DWT/CO Pretoria Office conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop on International Labour Standards (ILS).
The eight core Conventions are of particular importance as they are based on human rights enshrined in a large number of international human rights treaties and have hence received worldwide broad acceptance. Much remains however to be achieved in the implementation of these Conventions, as they, amongst others, may not be known to the public at large, including to workers.
The first part of the training provided general presentations on the ILO and its International Labour Standards, and an information sharing session on ILS database (Natlex) and general and various ways to navigate the ILO Website.
South Africa is a member of the ILO since 1994 (it was a member between 1919 and 1966 when it withdrew from the Organisation) and has ratified 27 Conventions, including the eight core Conventions. The Department of Employment and Labour made a presentation on the history of South Africa and the ILO, which led to various discussions and unavoidable discussion on strikes in the country.
The workshop ended with a session where the participants discussed in groups on how to jointly prepare their assignment. This assignment will consist in a 15 minute presentation of a selected topic/Convention regarding one of the eight core Conventions by each participant during Part II workshop that will take place end November.
