Recognizing that the promotion and development of quality apprenticeships can lead to decent work, contribute to effective and efficient responses to world of work challenges and provide lifelong learning opportunities, the International Labour Organization (ILO) adopted a new recommendation on quality apprenticeships during the International Labour Conference (ILC) in June 2023.

In implementing this new recommendation, the International Labour Organisation, through the South-South Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) project, convened a high-level policy dialogue and capacity building workshop on quality apprenticeships in South Africa from July 31 to August 4, 2023.

Through blended discussions and study visits in different apprentices host enterprises, TVET institutions, assessment centers and other relevant institutions, this event brought together senior policymakers representing governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations from China, India, Ethiopia, and South Africa to explore innovative approaches and initiatives which can contribute to enhance the apprenticeship systems in their respective countries.

This capacity building workshop offered a platform to collaborate and share knowledge, skills, know-how, and good practices in decent work and lifelong learning approaches as well as successful initiatives on quality apprenticeships in China, Ethiopia, India and South Africa.

At the end of the 5-day engagements, delegates have identified innovative promising practices on quality apprenticeships reflected in their country level priority action plans for the improvement of existing apprenticeship systems in their respective countries, based on the challenges and opportunities identified throughout the discussions.
